View Full Version : Are we ready?
A Deo et Rege
July 27th, 2008, 01:00 AM
I know there have been many threads on aliens already, but I am taking a different approach to the matter with this thread. My question is are we ready as a society to make contact with interplanetary beings. This brings to mind the question what would happen if we made contact? We as a society have never dealt with any other sentient being besides other humans. How would humanity react to a hyper intelligent life form; would we feel threatened? Contact with another equally intelligent or more advanced civilization would be difficult to grasp, and even more difficult to think of the effects this would have on our species. In the past we have not been the most accepting of others different from us, even when they are the same species, so how would we react to a species from an entirely different planet or galaxy?

humans are in general stupid, irrational and violent. any being that could get from way out there to earth would be far beyond our realm of intelligence and reason. theres also the physiological differences to consider. our ideal environments may be vastly different, we would be resistant and succeptible to vastly different pathogens, just think one brief contact with these other lifeforms may lead to contact with many many other life forms unintentionally and could possibly lead to mass extinctions
bet you weren't thinking along those lines, eh?

No, but the thought had crossed my mind. I think that a civilization that advanced would probably have already cured all know diseases, or is that taking it a little too far. It stands to reason that if they are capable of intergalactic travel eradicating a few pathogens wouldn't pose much of a challenge. However, we could infect them with a disease unknown to them, but seeing as all of our pathogens are carbon based they will probably pose no threat seeing as the other lifeforms may have a different basis for life.

we are far from ready for contact with other intelligent life forms. This is primarily because weall will not be able to understand their ways and abilities and it is a proven fact that unfamiliarity is the root to fear

cure all KNOWN diseases. there could be absolutely massive differences between lifeforms even to the extent that they may not be carbon based. our atmosphere, temperature, exposure to UV radiation may all be way different to what they require for sustained life.

true but in that case if they are carbon based and can adapt to our atmosphere who's to say that they aren't already among us and wouldn't breed with us? that's a thought to rattle some theorisit's mind

Hah, Sounds like from that movie "They Live" but yeah that would be crazy. I also agree that we are not ready to meet them. First of all, their technology would probably be incomprehensible and second, human beings would most likely react violently like shooting down a UFO. Well maybe not all of us but the military would be on it pretty quickly.

Yeah I think we're ready. I wanna see my intergalactic grandparents. I believe we were left here by aliens and we used be aliens an shit. We've already made contact a few times. Mostly because we are a large scale experiment set up by the greys.

Personally I do not feel that humanity is ready for contact with a more advanced civilization. Our urge for greed and power will turn the technology that we gain from these civilizations into weapons and we will destroy ourselves more quickly. I'll use the Greys which are believed to be from Zeta Reticuli as an example. Zeta Reticuli is 40 light years away, so either the Greys have such advanced technology that they can travel faster than life, or they have the ability to live much longer, making 40 years not that long in their lives.
Either way, if any government on the planet on their hands on that kind of tech, it would just lead to our demise.

Maybe we are Aliens lol. Because you know how there are those ancient cave drawings of people in space suits talking to humans? Maybe humanity wasn't intelligent enough to start a civilization so they came down and helped us start. Maybe whenever there is a UFO sighting or an abduction, its just their way of checking up on us and seeing how we are advancing. Maybe one day we will evolve into these beings.
It probably sounds childish to be using "Maybe" repeatedly but w/e, its just my opinion.

I dont agree with the poll. Are "we" ready for contact. I will say I am ready for contact, but i cant speak for the whole human race. I for one, would actually want a encounter with beings from different solar systems, or demensions, but i know a couple of people who would scream and run around in circles. And i sorta think that we have already been contacted, but i believe the Aliens have something worked out with the american goverment. Like for exchange of technology we give them, things they cant obtain on there world. but what do we really know?

I agree with exial. If i was abducted or I saw an alien face in my window, I wouldn't be afraid. I would be...in Shock. Like, I would probably be like paralyzed with shock not fear but we humans are only afraid of things we don't see often. Like the giant squid for example. Before it was discovered, it was a Sea Monster but now its just another animal. If aliens visited our planet everyday we would get used to it and wouldn't be afraid anymore.
Note: I'm Not saying any of you are afraid, just humans in general.

Yea dude. But then theres always the possibility that there are aliens living amongst us. and your right, if aliens became frequent visitors the excitment would die away. And we would find other things to excite our imaginations.

Maybe time is an illusion and we are only living in the moment and there is no past, only the stories of it and our generation has the connection they speak of in this video? Who knows.

Yeah thats exactly what I think lol. Its one of the theories that i think is most likely.
This has sorta a connection to that too. This explains our technology but it is no where near advanced as we take it to be. It could be though. If our world was not so obsessed with money, greed, religion, race and everything else keeping us from working together, we could achieve goals on a much higher scale.

these ideas almost sound pagan, we being descendants of superior beings trying to transcend to their level. basically if you think of the pagan gods as aliens it makes a lot of sense in this context.
but i don't think we're ready for contact with extraterrestrial beings, cause we still manage to fuck up terrestrial contact within our of species pretty much everyday.

I disagree with numerator because if we DID make contact with aliens (say they land here one day and reveal themselves) everyone would know, it would be EVERYWHERE. Everyone would want to be...part of it, like a riot. Of course, the government of the country the alien vessel landed in would definitely try to control it, but they would be overwhelmed by the sheer will of the people, otherwise be torn between the mixed views the people would have.

look what happened when the english found the americas 300 years ago. they pushed the indians off the land they had been on for thousands of years, after they got tired of killing or religiously converting them.
i read somewhere in this thread that humans arugue too much about money, power, and religion thus setting back our technology.
i personally think i would be partially read for contact as in the sense of, i would be frightend to the point of curiosity and wanting to understanding, but protective over what humanity has claimed

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God’. There is no salvation outside Christ. As a consequence no other life form has access to Christ who died once on this planet, while the whole universe is tainted by sin as Satan was an angle of God and went ‘back and forth’ (Job 1:7)

And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
~~(Job 1:7)
Christ died for the sins of all, so technically that would include aliens--would it not? Also, since God in an omnipresent being, and Christ being of God, that would make him an omnipresent being also, which would mean that he could have died on countless other planets at the same time, and still have only died once on our planet. Does that make any sense?

well were not ready at all. were too dumb and violent. lets say aleins come to our planet, then obviously theyre more advanced because they were able to bulid things to transport themselves all the way to earth. they would be able to manipulate us and possibly just take us all over. if, in the future, were able to bulid things to find them before they find us, we will be more advanced than them. usually when humans know theyre better than something they treat it.. bad. well never be ready to encounter them. no matter what well fuck it up.

Just watch the movie The Day The Earth Stood Still Aliens coming would be bad for the world as we know it. If they landed in America all the other countries would wonder why not them, and riot. Also, vise versa. The general population is Muslim (Christian in America). With an alien coming many people's faith would shatter. The military would try to kidnap and interrogate the alien because that race has figured out a way to exceed the speed of light (~3 x 10^8Meters per second if anyone was wondering) and our scientists have not even come close to this. Or they had traveled for many centuries.
Riots would start and eventually the alien would be murdered which would create more riots. There would be wars over the technology and every country would fight against each other, catastrophically throwing us into a world war, which would probably end in the destruction of the technology anyways.
Also, as humans being so nationalistic any technology recovered would be used to wage war against another country.
Some bacteria could kill them because if they did cure all know diseases that means that there are no more disease causing bacteria or viruses on their planet, meaning that none are immune to anything, because it would be a waste to create a cure for something that no longer exists. As is the case of various diseases today, did you get a polio shot?
There are countless reasons why they would not visit. My logical guess is that we are not ready and they do not want to create a global disaster.
Fact of the day: There have been sightings in every part of the world but only Americans believe that they have been abducted by aliens.

I think if we're ready depends on a lot of stuff.
1: Where they land-Some goverments and cultures would react differently
2: How many-A whole army would make people scared shitless while only 1 would probably get captured by the FBI
3: What they look like-Pretty much the same outcome as #2. Huge aliens + Huge weapons = people scared shitless.
4: How they react to us-If they are hostile, theres gonna be a war and we will most likely lose. If they are peaceful, then they would be judged by #2 and #3.
5: What situation the world is in-A world war would mean everyone would want the aliens to take their side. A global hunger crisis or something would make people beg them to help.
But humans are very unpredictable and theres no real way to tell what we are going to do. I think we will never be ready for contact, but if it happens, just hope no one screws everything up.

The source of the fact was from a Popular Science magazine where they were talking about aliens, ghosts, and other weird events, arguing if it was things like the EMF of the earth or the evidence that shows proof of these events.
It was about a year ago that i saw this magazine and the facts could have easily changed, because someone did not admit to it before.

well it all comes down to what people do when they discover even friendly benign new life.... i mean look at biologists and such "wow what a great new discovery, such a beautiful specimen"... then they kill it and cut it open
as for the not so friendly encounters with new creatures..... we try to kill it
and for our encounters with eachother for the most part on a large scale....
cultures only seem to come together and have an appreciation for eachother when they're in the process of killing eachother
i think of aliens as being fishermen (if they exist) and us being fish.... i heard a comedian say this so u can probably guess where this is going........ya (started off almost intelligent then kinda turned into rambling bullshit)

Well there is the belief that the universe is infinite and ever expanding. Also, the universe is pretty much uniform. This means that there should be an infinite amount of other civilizations. Everything that could have happened has happened. Everything that is going to happen has happened. If you want to argue that space does not have infinite time and thus they could be the exact same stage as us then pay attention to relativity. Some of these other galaxies and solar systems are moving at a faster rate than we are. This means that time travels faster. This means they become more advanced because relatively time seems the same for them and us but they are moving faster.
Also, it is more fun to think that they have come here, as we will go there when we have the technology. Also, I doubt we are the most intelligent life form, as so many want to believe.
Once again to reiterate the answer to the question, we are not ready. The whole world would collapse. Most of the world is Muslim, and most of the remaining population is Christian, only a few people in this world do not worship a god. Thus that alone would shatter everyone's belief. Morals would be lost. People would now think "why am I doing this now, I mean I won't get punished if I kill someone." And other things similar. People would scramble to try and prove that their religion is somehow true, but at-last they are no longer the only intelligent design (also creating a hatred similar to two brothers, one achieving more than the other). Also, where ever it landed would be significant. Country against country, asking itself why not me. Others laughing at others. Fights would break out. Also, PEOPLE ARE STUPID. Someone would be stupid and try to kill the alien. I mean really...do you think if a being can come at least 1.3 parsecs (this is the closest star and not the closest planet, let alone a planet suitable for life) that you could reasonably kill them? Or if it was one spaceship that they plan to take over the earth? Idiots...
Well those are the three things I could think of, I know there's a lot more because my friend and I came up with a list on this a while back, and it had about 20 things on it.

murders, rapes, torture, beastiality, canabilisim, war, anal plugs, the internet, rednecks, religious people, scientist risking there own planets existance to see if they can recreat the beggining of the univeres, dane cook, death metal, the kkk, terrorist, hobos, zoos, useing dead animals and plants to power almost everything (thats oil for the retards) retards, the list goes on.
see heres a few possible scenarios of what will happen when they get here(these are still the nice ones we're talking about)
1, we'll kill them.
2, theyll be like what the fuck. and leave
3, theyll abandon there peacfull ways and take us over, or just say fuck it and kill us all
4, point out whos obviously the smartest creatures on the planet, which wont be us
OR the most possible 5, they will give us there knowldege and we accept it apreciativly, this then gives us the power to make something amazing, and when we do, THE FUCKING DINOSUARS COME BACK!!!!! and fuck us in the ass while high-fiveing the aliens for their help.
or this one which is also pretty pluasible too 6, their amazing knowldged filld heads will explode at the sheer stupidity and fuck-upidness of this planets aparent top life form.
WE FUCK THE DEAD PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also RAV you're wrong chritianity is the most practiced religion, then islam (muslims follow islam for the slower folk out there) and your whole theory soley depends on whether or not these alians believe in "God" too not saying which "God" but "god" none the less

There is this book called the Visitors, and in it these aliens come and I think they take trees or something that we have abundance of (this book was written a while back, before there were a lot of environmentalists) and they made these flying cars that would run forever and had no pollution, in gratitude for letting them use our resources. Well this puts hundreds of millions of people out of work. Because of oil, gas stations, car makers, mechanics, and many other jobs. Well the point is that they did not, or it is implied that they did not, want to destroy the earth but were doing a favor.
It could be possible now. Any technology that they give us could easily outdate many of our current technologies. This would put many people out of jobs and destroy the economy. Also, we do not learn it ourselves. If someone gave you..say, an anti-gravity machine you may be able to reverse engineer it and build it but you would probably not know how it works. The process of getting there is what makes inventions so great. We need to understand how they work. If we know how something works we can improve on it, because we will advance our knowledge. The jet-plane was not built before the propeller plane. If it was then we would not have planes with propellers. We would not know how such a device might work, and we could not advance it. It is a step by step. Maybe when we achieve a highly developed world then they will come and help us understand new things that are not so far out of our reach. Like putting two propellers on one plane. How to shape the wings differently and so on. These are little steps that they could help us and explain why they work. I mean if I said see this grape that you have it can become wine, and never explaining how to distill and dry and age it. It becomes useless. It makes us useless, and them all powerful. I doubt that an advanced society would do this. They may have a galactic council watching us and waiting, maybe giving little hints at a time. Either way we will not know till it happens, or does not happen.
