depends entirely on what you're wanting to do. what sort of applications are you wanting to run? how much memory do you think you'd need? hard drive space? do you want a big ass screen? does brand matter to you? does it have to be new or would you settle for used?

That is the most appropriate, valid, and sensible post i've ever seen Ishkur make.

touche'
Well let it be known that i see you in a new light haha
You can be helpful with legit info when it comes to it
And to keep this in relevance to the thread, i recommend person to buy a USB mouse as well. Cuz laptops suck without a mouse.

i'm pretty sure you've gotten mad at people who genuinely needed help before...
but hey i'm ok with you turning over a new leaf haha
@person who did first post...
Do you just mean like a good computer in general or did you have something in mind? because if your looking for it to do something specific you'll need to consider what's in the computer too. for instance: a good computer can still have a shitty graphics card, which would affect your movie watching and game playing. lol i basically just echoed what ish said but oh well...
i've got an hp that works pretty nice. it has two hardrives which make it good for streamin videos... i'm not sure how or why but the salesguy made it sound like it was what i needed... it says hpsd.ms/pro.mmc.xd on the side but i'm not sure if that has anything to do with what kinda computer it is.

someone who 'genuinely needs help' on how to hack into their ex-boyfriends sister's myspace... yeah, i get mad at that.
someone needing legit computer help is a different story however.

Just don't get a lappy from Wal*Mart if you're looking for a good one. you can never get a great laptop from them, and if you found a good one you wanted, they overcharge it by about 3 or 400 $$ (or more).
Someone got me a Dell Inspiron from Walmart (as a gift) for about $1200. It had about 2 GB of RAM 138 GB C: storage space etc... it was a good computer, but not worth the money... If I had picked it out, I could've got more graphic memory, storage space, RAM, etc.
and to OP's question, it does depend on what you're going to be running and what you want. could you give a little more detail?

I am looking for one to run the operating system called Unix and install Python on it because i am going to become a computer programmer and I am starting to learn the languages. I have looked at ASUSs brand laptops but I do not know how good the laptops are. Also how much memory should i get and how much hard drive space. Any Brand would suit me except for Gateway, and I would settle for used if it is in good condition and wont give out on me because i have had some that have. I am in the process of learning the languages (in order from first to last) Python, C/C++,XHTML, Java, Perl, and LISP. I have heard so much from companies that I do not know what to choose and I would like some advice from the experienced people out there.

Excellent. Unix or other derivatives (Linux, Solaris, etc) don't really need much at all in terms of computing power to run very well. However, if you're going to be a programmer, you need a system that can compile your software at a decent speed.
Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop Product Details (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspnnb_1525?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&~oid=us~en~29~inspnnb_1525_anav2~~)
Just as a basic machine, I like that one. It doesn't have too much more than basic parts. It has a 250GB hard drive, which is extreme overkill, but.. always fun to have. The display is nice, (1280x800), and it has Wifi.

Theres nothing wrong with a walmart lappy, I have one myself and ive not complaints about it. ~600 buck for a dualcore 64 120GB harddrive and gig of ram that not bad. Baiscily i look at the hardware not the manufacturer. my same CPU is prob in some alianware lappy now. You buy the company's software and support when you buy big name ( windwos vista, nortons ect. )
Asus is making a name for there self with the EEE.

My laptop cost 800 with 160gb hardrive 2g ram and an AMD 64X2 Turion plus some fun stuff that most laptops have today like cd/dvd burner and wifi. Only downside is that it has a bad cooling system, but for the price I can live with it.
