i have recently just started making a homemade cannon. right now i'm on my first prototype which consists of a 65cm x 11cm PVC pipe barrel adapted to a 25cm x 15cm PVC pipe capped at the back. i have rigged up a small butane tank affixed to the outside of the bigger pipe with a valve release that allows me to fill the bigger pipe with propellent and then close the tank.
what i need now is a reliable ignition mechanism that can be built onto the cannon, minimizing the need to hold multiple devices to launch a payload.

P.S i dont intend on using PVC for the final product so don't criticise the fact.

i tried to make a cannon... and all i got was a bunch of flames coming out of the end for a second. i put BBs in it and they just fell out. haha

Now back to the topic at hand; if you are going to use a gaseous propellant I would suggest using a spark-plug as the ignition device.

ok well here is what we did for our poetatoe cannon and it should work. we took one of the igniters off of a gas grill and fixed it to the cannon. it worked fine. but we used to hair spray but like i said it should work(yes i know my spelling sucks)

some of the newer grills have a ignitor that is run off a AA battery....it's actually pretty simple to jack one from places like wal-mart or lowes...just make sure you have a buddy who can distract sales clerks.

since you were polite and did contribute i wont flame you, but you are not supposed to post in topics that are more than 2 weeks old, they are called "dead topics" and that is considered necro posting, your new so i will be nice and welcome to the site

The barrel of mine was much shorter. But the bastard was a beast.

i haven't shot mine for a while, i a little scared of the pvc being damaged, i don't want it to explode, but when i did shoot it, i shot a potato probably over a mile at a 45 degree angle, it was crazy.

u could use a piezo electric spark mechanism

in short:

the thing that makes your lighter work...

i used a piezo igniter from a grill, its bigger and make a bigger spark
